Frequently Asked Questions
A Groodle, also known as a Goldendoodle, is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They combine the gentle nature of Golden Retrievers with the low-shedding, intelligent traits of Poodles — making them excellent family companions.
At McLaren Groodles, we offer wool, combination and fleece coated Groodles — each with its own gorgeous texture and charm.
What is a wool coat?
The wool coat Groodle has dense, curly fur that closely resembles the traditional Poodle coat. It’s a popular choice for families with allergy sensitivities, as it tends to shed very little or not at all making it one of the most hypoallergenic coat types. Wool coats can be trimmed short for easier maintenance while still maintaining a soft, silky feel. Alternatively, they can be styled into the beloved “teddy bear” look, giving your Groodle that fluffy, cuddly appearance everyone adores.
While this coat is both beautiful and practical, it does require regular upkeep. To keep it in top condition, wool coats should be brushed 2–3 times per week and professionally groomed every 6–8 weeks.
What is a combination coat?
The combination coat is a unique blend of soft curls and gentle waves—right between the tight spirals of a wool coat and the looser texture of a fleece coat. On a Groodle, this coat creates a fluffy, teddy bear-like look that's both adorable and manageable. When kept long and well-maintained, the coat has a soft, flowing appearance with a lovely wave pattern that gives your Groodle a full, luxurious look. It can also be clipped shorter for a neater, lower-maintenance style that still keeps that signature cuddly charm.
Combination coats are generally a good choice for families, including those with sensitivities, though they may be just slightly less hypoallergenic than a full wool coat.
What is a fleece coat?
The fleece coat Groodle has a soft, silky texture with loose, flowing waves. This coat type is a favorite for many families because it’s low-shedding and generally well-tolerated by people with mild allergies.
Fleece coats are more relaxed than wool or combination coats, making them slightly easier to maintain while offering that signature fluffy Groodle charm. With weekly brushing and a grooming appointment every 10–12 weeks, this coat can stay soft, tangle-free, and beautiful year-round.
To care for a Groodle coat, we recommend using a slicker brush, a wide-tooth comb, and a leave-in detangler. Regular grooming is important to prevent matting and keep your Groodle looking and feeling their best.
Groodles can have varying coat types — some more curly, some more wavy — and are generally considered very low-shedding. While no dog is completely hypoallergenic, many families with allergies find Groodles easier to live with.
Groodles benefit from regular brushing to keep their coats soft and tidy, as well as professional grooming every 6–8 weeks. We’re happy to recommend local groomers familiar with their unique coats.

When it comes to puppy playtime, gentle is best. Groodle puppies — like all young pups — have soft developing bones and need extra care, so protecting their joints is super important. To keep your puppy safe and healthy, avoid activities that put too much strain on their joints—like jumping off stairs, beds, or couches, parent supervision when young children play with puppy. It’s also best to skip high-impact exercise such as talking long walks, excessive play with another dog, taking the dog running, you will be able to do this, but you just must wait till your puppy is older and their bones are more developed. Think short, joyful bursts of play mixed with lots of naps and snuggles. It’s the perfect recipe for a happy, healthy puppy.
